Inspired by the idea of marketers as mixers of ingredients, Neil Borden one of Culliton’s colleagues at Harvard, coined the phrase the marketing mix and used it wherever possible. According to Borden’s own account, he used the term, ‘marketing mix’ consistently from the late 1940s.  For instance, he is on record as having used the term, ‘marketing mix,’ in his presidential address given to the American Marketing Association in 1953.  In the mid-1960s, Borden published a retrospective article detailing the early history of the marketing mix in which he claims that he was inspired by Culliton’s idea of ‘mixers’, and credits himself with coining the term, ‘marketing mix’. Borden’s continued and consistent use of the phrase, “marketing mix,” contributed to the process of popularising the concept throughout the 1940s and 50s.
Professional credentials are also available for those who want to further their careers and be certified as specialists. The American Marketing Association recommends the Professional Certified Marketer (PCM) credential, which demonstrates that the individual stays current on best practices in the field. The Professional Researcher Certification (PRC) offered by the Marketing Research Association is designed for market research analysts. Those who wish to specialize in the area of public relations can earn a professional certification from the Public Relations Society of America.

Most marketing careers require a bachelor’s degree and some require or recommend a graduate degree. No matter which degree is eventually obtained, it all starts with getting a high school diploma. While most high school courses don’t relate directly to marketing, doing well in classes such as English and math is important. Additionally, if there are any clubs or organizations in your school that promote business or communications, you should dip your toe into the marketing pool by becoming involved in them. Student leadership can also teach high school students about marketing and promotions.

The field of digital marketing is growing rapidly as more companies are focusing their efforts on online advertising and e-sales. Digital marketing professionals have advanced knowledge and specialized skills in the areas of search engine optimization (SEO), pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, content management, and web design.
Research and development refer to activities in connection with corporate or government innovation. Research and development constitute the first stage of development of a potential new service or product. Research and development are very difficult to manage since the defining feature of the research is that the researchers do not know in advance exactly how to accomplish the desired result.
The many facets of marketing allow professionals to branch out into a number of different areas, developing specialized skills in areas such as publicity and public relations, market research, online marketing, advertising, and sales management. In 2014, a Forbes magazine article predicted digital marketing trends for 2015 and beyond, highlighting that traditional marketing channels will experience more overlap and that digital marketing will grow rapidly as it develops in conjunction with technology.

Financial services businesses include banks, brokerage firms, credit unions, credit cards, insurance companies, asset and investment companies such as private equity firms, private equity funds, real estate investment trusts, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, mutual funds, index funds, and hedge funds, stock exchanges, and other companies that generate profits through investment and management of capital.
A company on the other hand, is a separate legal entity and provides for limited liability as well as corporate tax rates. A company structure is more complicated and expensive to set up, but offers more protection and benefits for the owner.
The “marketing mix” gained widespread acceptance with the publication, in 1960, of E. Jerome McCarthy’s text, Basic Marketing: A Managerial Approach which outlined the ingredients in the mix as the memorable 4 Ps, namely product, price, place and promotion.  The marketing mix is based upon four controllable variables that a company manages in its effort to satisfy the corporation’s objectives as well as the needs and wants of a target market. Once there is understanding of the target market’s interests, marketers develop tactics, using the 4Ps, to encourage buyers to purchase product. The successful use of the model is predicated upon the degree to which the target market’s needs and wants have been understood, and the extent to which marketers have developed and correctly deployed the tactics. Today, the marketing mix or marketing program is understood to refer to the “set of marketing tools that the firm uses to pursue its marketing objectives in the target market”.
Companies that respond quickly to consumer preferences raise consumer awareness and increase brand satisfaction and loyalty. Netflix, for example, uses other media, such as The New York Times, to spread and increase consumer awareness with lists of upcoming films and series.
The production department would then start to manufacture the product, while the marketing department would focus on the promotion, distribution, pricing, etc. of the product. Additionally, a firm’s finance department would be consulted, with respect to securing appropriate funding for the development, production and promotion of the product. Inter-departmental conflicts may occur, should a firm adhere to the marketing orientation. Production may oppose the installation, support and servicing of new capital stock, which may be needed to manufacture a new product. Finance may oppose the required capital expenditure, since it could undermine a healthy cash flow for the organization.
A firm often performs this by producing a perceptual map, which denotes similar products produced in the same industry according to how consumers perceive their price and quality. From a product’s placing on the map, a firm would tailor its marketing communications to suit meld with the product’s perception among consumers, and its position among competitors’ offering.
During the 1940s, the discipline of marketing was in transition. Interest in the functional school of thought, which was primarily concerned with mapping the functions of marketing was waning while the managerial school of thought, which focussed on the problems and challenges confronting marketers was gaining ground.  The concept of marketers as “mixers of ingredients,” was first introduced by James Culliton, a Professor at Harvard Business School.  At this time theorists began to develop checklists of the elements that made up the marketing mix, however, there was little agreement as to what should be included in the list. Many scholars and practitioners relied on lengthy classifications of factors that needed to be considered to understand consumer responses. Neil Borden developed a complicated model in the late 1940s, based upon at least twelve different factors.
A formal approach to this customer-focused marketing is known as SIVA (Solution, Information, Value, Access). This system is basically the four Ps renamed and reworded to provide a customer focus.

Accounting, which has been called the “language of business”, measures the results of an organization’s economic activities and conveys this information to a variety of users, including investors, creditors, management, and regulators. Practitioners of accounting are known as accountants. The terms “accounting” and “financial reporting” are often used as synonyms.

Determining which approach is right for your business depends on your budget and on your target customer. You want to be sure that you are promoting your product where people will see it and where you will get the greatest exposure possible for the money spent (also known as “return on investment”).
This refers to the process of setting a price for a product, including discounts. The price need not be monetary; it can simply be what is exchanged for the product or services, e.g. time, energy, or attention or any sacrifices consumers make in order to acquire a product or service. The price is the cost that a consumer pays for a product–monetary or not. Methods of setting prices are in the domain of pricing science.

Major stock exchanges include the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Singapore Exchange , Hong Kong Stock Exchange, New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ (the USA), the London Stock Exchange (UK), the Tokyo Stock Exchange (Japan), and Bombay Stock Exchange (India). Most countries with capital markets have at least one.
Limited liability companies (LLC), limited liability partnerships, and other specific types of business organization protect their owners or shareholders from business failure by doing business under a separate legal entity with certain legal protections. In contrast, unincorporated businesses or persons working on their own are usually not as protected.
The four Ps, often referred to as the marketing mix or the marketing program, represent the basic tools which marketers can use to bring their products or services to market. They are the foundation of managerial marketing and the marketing plan typically devotes a section to each of these Ps.

Business is the activity of making one’s living or making money by producing or buying and selling goods or services. Simply put, it is any activity or enterprise entered into for profit. It does not mean it is a company, a corporation, partnership, or have any such formal organization, but it can range from a street peddler to General Motors. The term is also often used colloquially (but not by lawyers or public officials) to refer to a company, but this article will not deal with that sense of the word.
A business name structure does not separate the business entity from the owner, which means that the owner of the business is responsible and liable for all debts incurred by the business. If the business acquires debts[,] the creditor or creditors can go after your personal possessions. A business structure does not allow for corporate tax rates. In most countries, there are laws which treat small corporations differently from large ones. They may be exempt from certain legal filing requirements or labor laws, have simplified procedures in specialized areas, and have simplified, advantageous, or slightly different tax treatment.
Marketing encompasses not only determines consumer need, it also helps create consumer need. It really begins with understanding your potential consumer. One well-known 21st-century marketing failure had to do with U.S. companies’ attempts to sell deodorants in China. What these U.S. companies failed to realize is that, biologically, ethnic Chinese do not have the same body odor issues as Westerners. They also failed to take into account that Chinese consumers commonly regard sweating as a healthy activity that — among other things — purifies the system and not, as is common among Americans, as a social problem.
