As stated previously, the senior management of a firm would formulate a general business strategy for a firm. However, this general business strategy would be interpreted and implemented in different contexts throughout the firm.
Other important criticisms include that the marketing mix lacks a strategic framework and is therefore unfit to be a planning instrument, particularly when uncontrollable, external elements are an important aspect of the marketing environment. [46]

Depending on career goals and overall ambition, a graduate degree may be needed. This is especially true for those at upper level management and leadership positions, such as chief marketing officers or vice president of sales. While there are marketing graduate degrees, a graduate degree like a Master of Business Administration (MBA) is highly advisable to get to the very top of the ladder. Other graduate marketing degrees are more focused on a specific aspect of marketing, such as digital marketing and marketing management. For other positions, such as researcher or professor, a PhD could be recommended.
A firm using a sales orientation focuses primarily on the selling/promotion of the firm’s existing products, rather than determining new or unmet consumer needs or desires. Consequently, this entails simply selling existing products, using promotion and direct sales techniques to attain the highest sales possible.[23] The sales orientation “is typically practised with unsought goods.” [24] One study found that industrial companies are more likely to hold a sales orientation than consumer goods companies. [25] The approach may also suit scenarios in which a firm holds dead stock, or otherwise sells a product that is in high demand, with little likelihood of changes in consumer tastes diminishing demand.
To overcome the deficiencies of the 4 P model, some authors have suggested extensions or modifications to the original model. Extensions of the four P’s include “people”, “process”, and “physical evidence” and are often applied in the case of services marketing[47] Other extensions have been found necessary in retail marketing, industrial marketing and internet marketing:

The term “marketing” covers a lot of different activities — all associated with selling your company’s products and services. Advertising is the most obvious marketing activity, but so is consumer research, which better matches your product to consumer wants and needs. Product design, also, is a form of marketing, as it helps match your company’s products and services to known customer needs.
Demand for a good begins to taper off, and the firm may opt to discontinue manufacture of the product. This is so, if revenue for the product comes from efficiency savings in production, over actual sales of a good/service. However, if a product services a niche market, or is complementary to another product, it may continue manufacture of the product, despite a low level of sales/revenue being accrued.

Convenience, shopping, specialty or unsought good: Is your product something that people pick up regularly when doing their errands (convenience good); is it something they would shop for and compare different brands (shopping good); is it something special they would only buy infrequently, like an expensive gift or luxury item (specialty good); or is it something they don’t really want, but may need to buy (unsought good)? Understanding which category your product fits into will be important in determining how to price it, where to sell it and how to promote it.
The efficient and effective operation of a business, and study of this subject, is called management. Customer orientation: A firm in the market economy can survive by producing goods that persons are willing and able to buy. Consequently, ascertaining consumer demand is vital for a firm’s future viability and even existence as a going concern.
Internet marketing presents both marketing practitioners and scholars with special challenges including: customer empowerment, new communication modes, real-time interactivity, access to global markets, high levels of market transparency and difficulty maintaining competitive advantages. While some scholars argue for an expanded marketing mix for internet marketing, most argue that entirely new models are required. [53]
Marketing communications is an audience-centered activity designed to engage audiences and promote responses. It is defined by actions a firm takes to communicate with end-users, consumers, and external parties.
Finance is a field that deals with the study of investments. It includes the dynamics of assets and liabilities over time under conditions of different degrees of uncertainty and risk. Finance can also be defined as the science of money management. Finance aims to price assets based on their risk level and their expected rate of return. Finance can be broken into three different sub-categories: public finance, corporate finance and personal finance.
Financial services businesses include banks, brokerage firms, credit unions, credit cards, insurance companies, asset and investment companies such as private equity firms, private equity funds, real estate investment trusts, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, mutual funds, index funds, and hedge funds, stock exchanges, and other companies that generate profits through investment and management of capital.

Marketing degrees are not only found at multiple levels, but with varying concentrations and opportunities for specialization. Some degrees are for entry-level positions and provide a solid foundational knowledge base for any number of marketing careers. Other degrees are more specific, such as the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which is targeted toward research and teaching, and offer specialty areas such as behavioral and quantitative marketing. Many of these unique marketing degrees found at the graduate level also prepare students for leadership and management roles upon graduation.
Jobs for those specializing in print ads or other forms of traditional advertising may be limited as consumer behavior changes with the explosion of the web-based economy. Advertising and promotions managers who once worked exclusively with print ads will need to adapt strategies that encompass digital media as consumers spend more time online. Those who can navigate the digital world and who gain an understanding of its possibilities will have the best job prospects in the upcoming decade.
