Marketing is customarily part of business studies, so while some marketing degrees may be in marketing, others may be in business with a marketing emphasis.
Market segmentation consists of taking the total heterogeneous market for a product and dividing it into several sub-markets or segments, each of which tends to be homogeneous in all significant aspects.
The efficient and effective operation of a business, and study of this subject, is called management. The major branches of management are financial management, marketing management, human resource management, strategic management, production management, operations management, service management, and information technology management.
Business is the activity of making one’s living or making money by producing or buying and selling goods or services. Simply put, it is any activity or enterprise entered into for profit. It does not mean it is a company, a corporation, partnership, or have any such formal organization, but it can range from a street peddler to General Motors. The term is also often used colloquially (but not by lawyers or public officials) to refer to a company, but this article will not deal with that sense of the word.

Effective marketing management is crucial for any business. Marketing courses from the Department of Marketing, Business Economics & Law provide students with: (a) a sound understanding of consumer behaviour and customer decision making; (b) an understanding of how to collect and use information about the marketplace; and (c) an ability to integrate the components of a marketing mix to solve marketing problems. Optional courses enable students to obtain greater depth in functional areas of marketing such as promotion, selling, and channel management, or exposure to such exchange environments as retailing, services, and international trade.
Organizational orientation: In this sense, a firm’s marketing department is often seen as of prime importance within the functional level of an organization. Information from an organization’s marketing department would be used to guide the actions of other department’s within the firm. As an example, a marketing department could ascertain (via marketing research) that consumers desired a new type of product, or a new usage for an existing product. With this in mind, the marketing department would inform the R&D department to create a prototype of a product/service based on consumers’ new desires.

Many businesses are operated through a separate entity such as a corporation or a partnership (either formed with or without limited liability). Most legal jurisdictions allow people to organize such an entity by filing certain charter documents with the relevant Secretary of State or equivalent and complying with certain other ongoing obligations. The relationships and legal rights of shareholders, limited partners, or members are governed partly by the charter documents and partly by the law of the jurisdiction where the entity is organized. Generally speaking, shareholders in a corporation, limited partners in a limited partnership, and members in a limited liability company are shielded from personal liability for the debts and obligations of the entity, which is legally treated as a separate “person”. This means that unless there is misconduct, the owner’s own possessions are strongly protected in law if the business does not succeed.
The marketing orientation is perhaps the most common orientation used in contemporary marketing. It is a customer-centric approach that involves a firm basing its marketing program around products that suit new consumer tastes. Firms adopting a marketing orientation typically engage in extensive market research to gauge consumer desires, use R&D to develop a product attuned to the revealed information, and then utilize promotion techniques to ensure consumers are aware of the product’s existence and the benefits it can deliver.  Scales designed to measure a firm’s overall market orientation have been developed and found to be relatively robust in a variety of contexts.

A firm often performs this by producing a perceptual map, which denotes similar products produced in the same industry according to how consumers perceive their price and quality. From a product’s placing on the map, a firm would tailor its marketing communications to suit meld with the product’s perception among consumers, and its position among competitors’ offering.
Services marketing needs to account for the unique characteristics of services (i.e. intangibility, perishability, heterogeneity and the inseparability of production and consumption). In order to recognize the special challenges involved in selling services, as opposed to goods, some authors advocate extending the model to 7 Ps for service industries by adding; Process – the way in which orders are handled, customers are satisfied and the service is delivered; Physical Evidence – is tangible evidence with which customers interact and with the potential to impact on the customer’s service experience; People -service personnel and other customers with whom customers interact and form part of the overall service experience. 
Morgan, in Riding the Waves of Change (Jossey-Bass, 1988), suggests that one of the greatest limitations of the 4 Ps approach “is that it unconsciously emphasizes the inside–out view (looking from the company outwards), whereas the essence of marketing should be the outside–in approach”. An inside-out approach is the traditional planning approach where the organisation identifies its desired goals and objectives which are often based around what has always been done. Marketing’s task then becomes one of “selling” the organisation’s products and messages to the “outside” or external stakeholders. In contrast, an outside-in approach first seeks to understand the needs and wants of the consumer. 
There’s no doubt that marketers are masters at influencing the masses to learn about, purchase, and enjoy the world’s products and services. Does this sound like a profession in which you would thrive?
In many countries, it is difficult to compile all the laws that can affect a business into a single reference source. Laws can govern treatment of labour and employee relations, worker protection and safety, discrimination on the basis of age, gender, disability, race, and in some jurisdictions, sexual orientation, and the minimum wage, as well as unions, worker compensation, and working hours and leave.
In legal parlance, the owners of a company are normally referred to as the “members”. In a company limited or unlimited by shares (formed or incorporated with a share capital), this will be the shareholders. In a company limited by guarantee, this will be the guarantors. Some offshore jurisdictions have created special forms of offshore company in a bid to attract business for their jurisdictions. Examples include “segregated portfolio companies” and restricted purpose companies.
The ‘marketing concept’ proposes that in order to satisfy the organizational objectives, an organization should anticipate the needs and wants of potential consumers and satisfy them more effectively than its competitors. This concept originated from Adam Smith’s book The Wealth of Nations, but would not become widely used until nearly 200 years later. Marketing and Marketing Concepts are directly related.

A firm focusing on a production orientation specializes in producing as much as possible of a given product or service in order to achieve economies of scale or economies of scope. A production orientation may be deployed when a high demand for a product or service exists, coupled with certainty that consumer tastes and preferences remain relatively constant (similar to the sales orientation). The so-called production era is thought to have dominated marketing practice from the 1860s to the 1930s, but other theorists argue that evidence of the production orientation can still be found in some companies or industries. Specifically Kotler and Armstrong note that the production philosophy is “one of the oldest philosophies that guides sellers… [and] is still useful in some situations.” 
Professional credentials are also available for those who want to further their careers and be certified as specialists. The American Marketing Association recommends the Professional Certified Marketer (PCM) credential, which demonstrates that the individual stays current on best practices in the field. The Professional Researcher Certification (PRC) offered by the Marketing Research Association is designed for market research analysts. Those who wish to specialize in the area of public relations can earn a professional certification from the Public Relations Society of America.
The message that you use and the brand image that you develop are critical to getting people to know and like your product. Your message needs to convince consumers that they need or want your product, and that it will bring them value. Your brand has to be engaging enough that they remember it and think of your business and product when making purchasing decisions or recommending products to their friends.
Individuals with strong planning, organization and communication skills can pursue a career as a meeting or event planner. These jobs encompass planning conferences, conventions and special events. Companies may hire event planners to coordinate trade shows and other company events, organize meetings, and identify and secure venues that are ideal to provide exposure for the organization or to generate sales. They may also be involved with negotiating contracts and reviewing event invoices and bills to approve payment.
New or existing product: If your product is a new product, you will have to create a market demand for it (convince people that they need it). If you are creating a new version of something that already exists, you will need to show people that it is better or less expensive than what your competitors are offering.
Canada’s oilsands are getting a taste of their slower-growth future. Husky Energy Inc. on Thursday became the second big oilsands producer to say that it throttled back first-quarter production in response to steeper discounts for Canadian crude.
Businesses often have important “intellectual property” that needs protection from competitors for the company to stay profitable. This could require patents, copyrights, trademarks, or preservation of trade secrets. Most businesses have names, logos, and similar branding techniques that could benefit from trademarking. Patents and copyrights in the United States are largely governed by federal law, while trade secrets and trademarking are mostly a matter of state law. Because of the nature of intellectual property, a business needs protection in every jurisdiction in which they are concerned about competitors. Many countries are signatories to international treaties concerning intellectual property, and thus companies registered in these countries are subject to national laws bound by these treaties. In order to protect trade secrets, companies may require employees to sign noncompete clauses which will impose limitations on an employee’s interactions with stakeholders, and competitors.
