In many countries, it is difficult to compile all the laws that can affect a business into a single reference source. Laws can govern treatment of labour and employee relations, worker protection and safety, discrimination on the basis of age, gender, disability, race, and in some jurisdictions, sexual orientation, and the minimum wage, as well as unions, worker compensation, and working hours and leave.
This refers to how the product gets to the customer; the distribution channels and intermediaries such as wholesalers and retailers who enable customers to access products or services in a convenient manner. This third P has also sometimes been called Place, referring to the channel by which a product or service is sold (e.g. online vs. retail), which geographic region or industry, to which segment (young adults, families, business people), etc. also referring to how the environment in which the product is sold in can affect sales.
Public relations departments are in charge of managing communications with the media, consumers, and the public. Companies, non-profit organizations, government agencies and educational institutions must all handle public relations to some extent, with each organization’s unique needs dictating the focus and tasks of its public relations department. In general, individuals in these departments serve as spokespeople and liaisons, promote events or newsworthy developments, and generally work to ensure the company or organization maintains a positive image in the eyes of the public.
Marketing professionals must have strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to negotiate contracts and work with clients, while leadership abilities are critical for those who are in charge of a marketing department or lead a creative team. Strong research and analytical skills allow them to organize market research data and provide insights about their findings. Also critical to success in this field are skills in organization, time management and persuasion, as well as creativity and imagination.
In recent decades, states modeled some of their assets and enterprises after business enterprises. In 2003, for example, the People’s Republic of China modeled 80% of its state-owned enterprises on a company-type management system. Many state institutions and enterprises in China and Russia have transformed into joint-stock companies, with part of their shares being listed on public stock markets.

Safety is a key business concept that is defined by Merriam-Webster as “the condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss”. The marketing orientation is perhaps the most common orientation used in contemporary marketing. It is a customer-centric approach that involves a firm basing its marketing program around products that suit new consumer tastes. Firms adopting a marketing orientation typically engage in extensive market research to gauge consumer desires, use R&D to develop a product attuned to the revealed information, and then utilize promotion techniques to ensure consumers are aware of the product’s existence and the benefits it can deliver.  Scales designed to measure a firm’s overall market orientation have been developed and found to be relatively robust in a variety of contexts. 
For example, a clothing manufacturer may consider a number of possible target markets — toddlers, athletes, grandparents, teenagers and tourists. A general profile of each of these potential markets will reveal which ones are most realistic, pose less risk and are more likely to show a profit. A test market survey of the most likely target groups, or those who buy for them, such as parents for babies and toddlers, can help you separate real target markets from unlikely possibilities.

Even when the state of the economy fluctuates, the demand for marketing professionals often stays relatively steady. Companies have ongoing needs for marketing experts who can develop sales and advertising strategies, solve complex problems, and generate new ideas to promote products and services. While many marketing professionals obtain a degree in business with a marketing major, it’s not the only way into the field. For example, some larger companies and corporations offer exclusive marketing training programs for college graduates so they can gain hands-on experience in the field and grow with the company.
A firm focusing on a production orientation specializes in producing as much as possible of a given product or service in order to achieve economies of scale or economies of scope. A production orientation may be deployed when a high demand for a product or service exists, coupled with certainty that consumer tastes and preferences remain relatively constant (similar to the sales orientation). The so-called production era is thought to have dominated marketing practice from the 1860s to the 1930s, but other theorists argue that evidence of the production orientation can still be found in some companies or industries. Specifically Kotler and Armstrong note that the production philosophy is “one of the oldest philosophies that guides sellers… [and] is still useful in some situations.”

In the consumer-driven approach, consumer wants are the drivers of all strategic marketing decisions. No strategy is pursued until it passes the test of consumer research. Every aspect of a market offering, including the nature of the product itself, is driven by the needs of potential consumers. The starting point is always the consumer. The rationale for this approach is that there is no point spending R&D funds developing products that people will not buy. History attests to many products that were commercial failures in spite of being technological breakthroughs.
Services marketing needs to account for the unique characteristics of services (i.e. intangibility, perishability, heterogeneity and the inseparability of production and consumption). In order to recognize the special challenges involved in selling services, as opposed to goods, some authors advocate extending the model to 7 Ps for service industries by adding; Process – the way in which orders are handled, customers are satisfied and the service is delivered; Physical Evidence – is tangible evidence with which customers interact and with the potential to impact on the customer’s service experience; People -service personnel and other customers with whom customers interact and form part of the overall service experience.

Marketing research is a systematic process of analyzing data which involves conducting research to support marketing activities, and the statistical interpretation of data into information. This information is then used by managers to plan marketing activities, gauge the nature of a firm’s marketing environment and to attain information from suppliers.
When marketing a specific product, it’s important that you know a lot about the type of people who would be interested in your product. Are they men or women? Do they fall within a certain tax bracket? Do they like to shop for dresses at Nordstrom or are they found purchasing lumber at Menards? By researching what customers want and need when it comes to a type of product, you’ll be able to better market that product to an audience who would love to buy it.
A firm often performs this by producing a perceptual map, which denotes similar products produced in the same industry according to how consumers perceive their price and quality. From a product’s placing on the map, a firm would tailor its marketing communications to suit meld with the product’s perception among consumers, and its position among competitors’ offering.
To overcome the deficiencies of the 4 P model, some authors have suggested extensions or modifications to the original model. Franchises: A franchise is a system in which entrepreneurs purchase the rights to open and run a business from a larger corporation. Franchising in the United States is widespread and is a major economic powerhouse. One out of twelve retail businesses in the United States are franchised and 8 million people are employed in a franchised business.
The term “marketing” covers a lot of different activities — all associated with selling your company’s products and services. Advertising is the most obvious marketing activity, but so is consumer research, which better matches your product to consumer wants and needs.
