For example, a clothing manufacturer may consider a number of possible target markets — toddlers, athletes, grandparents, teenagers and tourists. A general profile of each of these potential markets will reveal which ones are most realistic, pose less risk and are more likely to show a profit. A test market survey of the most likely target groups, or those who buy for them, such as parents for babies and toddlers, can help you separate real target markets from unlikely possibilities.
Marketing degrees are not only found at multiple levels, but with varying concentrations and opportunities for specialization. Some degrees are for entry-level positions and provide a solid foundational knowledge base for any number of marketing careers. Other degrees are more specific, such as the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which is targeted toward research and teaching, and offer specialty areas such as behavioral and quantitative marketing. Many of these unique marketing degrees found at the graduate level also prepare students for leadership and management roles upon graduation.

Retail marketing needs to account for the unique facets of retail stores. A number of authors have argued for the inclusion of two new Ps, namely, Personnel and Presentation since these contribute to the customer’s unique retail experience and are the principal basis for retail differentiation. Some scholars also recommend adding Retail Format (i.e. retail formula) since it contributes to customer expectations. The modified retail marketing mix is often called the 6 Ps of retailing.
The Department of Marketing, Business Economics & Law offers a wide variety of courses concerning business economics. Convenience, shopping, specialty or unsought good: Is your product something that people pick up regularly when doing their errands (convenience good); is it something they would shop for and compare different brands (shopping good); is it something special they would only buy infrequently, like an expensive gift or luxury item (specialty good); or is it something they don’t really want, but may need to buy (unsought good)? Understanding which category your product fits into will be important in determining how to price it, where to sell it and how to promote it.
A firm employing a product orientation is mainly concerned with the quality of its own product. A product orientation is based on the assumption that, all things being equal, consumers will purchase products of a superior quality. The approach is most effective when the firm has deep insights into customers and their needs and desires derived from research and (or) intuition and understands consumers’ quality expectations and price they are willing to pay. For example, Sony Walkman and Apple iPod were innovative product designs that addressed consumers’ unmet needs. Although the product orientation has largely been supplanted by the marketing orientation, firms practising a product orientation can still be found in haute couture and in arts marketing.
An internship is an important step toward finding postgraduate employment. Not only does the internship give valuable real-world and hands-on experience, it also helps interns get their foot in the door of prospective employers and establish professional connections – that networking can come in handy later in their career. Internships may be during the summer of the bachelor’s program but might also be post-graduate.

Internet marketing presents both marketing practitioners and scholars with special challenges including: customer empowerment, new communication modes, real-time interactivity, access to global markets, high levels of market transparency and difficulty maintaining competitive advantages. While some scholars argue for an expanded marketing mix for internet marketing, most argue that entirely new models are required.
Where two or more individuals own a business together but have failed to organize a more specialized form of vehicle, they will be treated as a general partnership. The terms of a partnership are partly governed by a partnership agreement if one is created, and partly by the law of the jurisdiction where the partnership is located. No paperwork or filing is necessary to create a partnership, and without an agreement, the relationships and legal rights of the partners will be entirely governed by the law of the jurisdiction where the partnership is located. A single person who owns and runs a business is commonly known as a sole proprietor, whether that person owns it directly or through a formally organized entity. Depending on the business needs, an adviser can decide what kind is proprietorship will be most suitable.

Our experience working with Business in Edmonton Magazine has been nothing but wonderful! From the very start of the process to the last proof before print, the article their team wrote was accurate and helpful in showcasing who we are as a company and how the Edmonton business community is important to our overall business and relationship goals. They were positive and quick to respond regarding the vendor/sponsor process and as a direct result of the article and advertisement, we received three leads for the month of February. It was amazing to see that one of the companies, actually circled our article out of their magazine and showed us how they noticed us and how they are looking forward in working with us for future projects! We have now closed one of those three leads and we would definitely recommend the Business in Edmonton Magazine as a way to promote one’s organization!

Public relations (or PR, as an acronym) is the use of media tools by a firm in order to promote goodwill from an organization to a target market segment, or other consumers of a firm’s good/service. PR stems from the fact that a firm cannot seek to antagonize or inflame its market base, due to incurring a lessened demand for its good/service. Organizations undertake PR in order to assure consumers, and to forestall negative perceptions towards it.

The Economist reported a recent conference in Rome on the subject of the simulation of adaptive human behavior. It shared mechanisms to increase impulse buying and get people “to buy more by playing on the herd instinct.” The basic idea is that people will buy more of products that are seen to be popular, and several feedback mechanisms to get product popularity information to consumers are mentioned, including smart-cart technology and the use of Radio Frequency Identification Tag technology. A “swarm-moves” model was introduced by a Florida Institute of Technology researcher, which is appealing to supermarkets because it can “increase sales without the need to give people discounts.”

There are several types of master’s degree available, such as a Master of Science (MS) in marketing or a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a marketing concentration. Either degree will help with professional advancement, though the MBA might be better suited for advancements involving management responsibility.
